The Ultimate Guide to Lightning Lanes at Walt Disney World

What Are Lightning Lanes?
Welcome to 2025 at the Walt Disney World Resort, where everything you need to plan your perfect day is in the palm of your hands. Seriously. Park maps, show times, character experiences, and more are available via the My Disney Experience mobile app. Long gone are the days of FastPasses and the (short-lived) Genie+ system. Now, Lightning Lane Passes are your key to maximizing your park day.
But first, let’s start with a quick overview of important key words, shall we?
THE LIGHTNING LANE – The Lightning Lane (or LL for short) is the faster line that lets you skip the regular standby line for most attractions in Walt Disney World. Think of it as your way to “cut the line” and feel like a VIP, without being on a VIP Tour.
LIGHTNING LANE PREMIER PASS – Premier Pass allows one-time entry to each Lightning Lane experience in a theme park—to enjoy at your leisure that day. No pre-booking or return times required! “LLPP” for short.
LIGHTNING LANE MULTI PASS – Multi Pass is the optional service you can purchase to skip long lines and traditional standby queues by using the Lightning Lane. When you buy this, you can pre-book 3 Lightning Lanes before you get to the park. You’ll choose the attraction AND the one-hour window, or “return time”, to use the Lightning Lane. “LLMP” for short.
LIGHTNING LANE SINGLE PASS – Single Pass are the few rides that aren’t included with the Multi Pass, but you can buy and pre-book them a la carte with a limit of 2 per day. “LLSP” for short.
Keeping up so far? Good. Let’s get to the good stuff.

- Open the My Disney Experience app, then tap the Lightning Lane Passes section on the home screen.
- Select a date and theme park.
- Select a Lightning Lane Single Pass, a Lightning Lane Multi Pass or both.
- If you select a Lightning Lane Multi Pass, you can choose up to 3 Lightning Lane Multi Pass experiences and arrival windows in advance (one ride or attraction from the Tier 1 list, and two rides or attractions from the Tier 2 list)
- If you select a Lightning Lane Single Pass, you can choose an arrival window in advance.

I Need to Modify A Ride, Can I Do That?
Changed your plans… or your mind? You can modify your Lightning Lane selections via the My Disney Experience app.
- To get started, tap the Lightning Lane Passes section on the app’s home screen to find your plans. Then, you can:
- Change each selected experience and/or arrival window in advance (subject to availability)—up until the start of the arrival window
- Change your selected park and/or date in advance (subject to availability)—up until the moment you redeem your first Lightning Lane selection of the day.
Making Reservations Throughout the Day
Disney allows you to hold up to 3 Lightning Lane return times in your account at any given time. In order to make your next return time selection, you’ll need to scan into a ride to free up space! I like to call it a “one in, one out” policy. Once you’ve scanned into a ride, you can book your next one. This continues all throughout the day. If you are planning to Park Hop at all, you’ll be able to make a selection at a different park only after you’ve scanned into your first selection of the day!
